Koi or more specifically nishikigoi, are ornamental varieties of domesticated common carp that are kept for decorative purposes in outdoor koi ponds or water gardens.

Koi varieties are distinguished by coloration, patterning, and scalation. Some of the major colors are white, black, red, yellow, blue, and cream. The most popular category of koi is the Gosanke, which is made up of the Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku, and Showa Sanshoku varieties.

Koi Fish Food.


Koi fish are beautiful vibrantly colored fish. They are related to goldfish and can become quite large, reaching up to 3 feet. They can be fed a variety of foods, including commercial flake fish food. Koi fish, however, may also eat live foods and other delicacies occasionally. Koi eat a variety of foods to satisfy their dietary needs. They are omnivorous and nibble on vegetation as well as some meaty foods. Flake foods usually contain earthworm or a variety of meals such as fish and shrimp and vitamins. Koi eat fresh fruit they wouldn't commonly find in the wild in their natural habitat.
Koi fish may also eat pellet food. This food sinks down and softens. It is made primarily of spirulina and wheat germ, or shrimp and krill. It is good to alternate between the two as koi need both protein and vegetation in their diet. Pellets may cut down on pond waste in comparison with flake food.

Like most fish, koi reproduce through spawning in which a female lays a vast number of eggs and one or more males fertilize them. Nurturing the resulting offspring (referred to as "fry") is a tricky and tedious job, usually done only by professionals. Although we carefully select the parents we wish based on their desired characteristics, the resulting fry will nonetheless exhibit a wide range of color and quality. Koi will produce thousands of offspring from a single spawning.

It is from a handful of Koi breeds that all other Nishikigoi types were bred, with the exception of the Ogon variety (single colored, metallic Koi) which wasn't developed until recently.
